What is DeFi?

DeFi means decentralized finance: lending, borrowing, trading, stablecoins and yield built on public blockchains and run by smart contracts instead of banks or brokers. The contract holds the funds and enforces the rules in code that anyone can read. There is no account to open and no manager to call. That is the appeal and the risk in one sentence, because the code is the bank and a bug in the code is a bank robbery.

The number this page is built around is TVL, total value locked. TVL is the dollar value of every asset deposited in a protocol's contracts right now. It is the closest thing DeFi has to a size metric: how much capital trusts a given chain or app to hold it. The TVL by Chain block reads live from DefiLlama and ranks where that capital sits across networks. Top Protocols by TVL drills into the individual apps holding the most. The yield table pairs a Pool with its Chain and current rate so you can see what deposits actually pay and the fees leaderboard shows which protocols earn real revenue rather than just parking deposits. The DeFi News feed tracks exploits, launches and rate moves.

Read TVL carefully, because it measures deposits, not health. TVL can climb purely because token prices rose while nothing new was deposited and it can be inflated by the same dollar counted across several protocols that reference each other. High TVL means capital is present. It does not mean the yield is safe or the protocol is solvent. Pair the TVL figure with the fees leaderboard: a protocol earning real fees has users, while a protocol with high TVL and near-zero fees is often just farming its own incentives.

Who is this page for. If you allocate across DeFi, the chain and protocol rankings show where liquidity is moving before the narrative catches up. If you are new, learn what TVL and yield mean here, then read the news feed for a week before depositing anything. The tokens behind these protocols trade on the venues you track on the Market page and a growing share of DeFi collateral now lives on the same chains powering the DePIN and AI sectors.

Common questions

What does TVL mean in DeFi?

TVL stands for total value locked: the dollar value of all the assets currently deposited in a protocol's smart contracts. It is used as a rough size and trust metric for a chain or application.

What does TVL actually measure?

TVL measures deposits, not health or safety. It can rise just because token prices went up and the same dollar can be counted across protocols that reference each other, so it should be read alongside real usage signals like fees.

Is a high-TVL protocol safe?

Not necessarily. High TVL means a lot of capital is present, not that the code is bug-free or the yield is sustainable. A protocol earning real fees has genuine users; high TVL with near-zero fees often just reflects incentive farming.

How is DeFi different from a bank?

In DeFi a smart contract holds the funds and enforces the rules in public code, with no account to open and no manager to call. That removes intermediaries but also removes their protections: a bug in the contract can drain funds with no recourse.
