What is DePIN?

DePIN stands for decentralized physical infrastructure networks. The idea is simpler than the acronym: instead of one company spending billions to build a wireless network or a mapping fleet or a storage cloud, a protocol pays token rewards to anyone who runs the hardware themselves. Thousands of independent operators plug in a hotspot, a dashcam, a hard drive or a GPU, the network verifies the work that device does and the operator earns tokens for it. The infrastructure is owned by the people running it rather than held on one corporate balance sheet.

The common misconception is that DePIN is just a rebrand of the old proof-of-coverage hotspot boom. Coverage rewards were the first version and plenty of those networks over-promised. The ones that matter now are where the physical work has real demand behind it: compute that AI teams actually rent, storage that holds real data, sensors that feed real models. When you read the market cap figure in Network Stats, read it against whether the network sells anything, not just how many devices signed up. Emissions inflate a device count fast. Paying customers are harder to fake. DePIN compute overlaps heavily with the AI sector and these tokens trade on the same venues you track under DeFi.
